  • Part 1: Parents of children/teens

Anxiety is the top mental health problem children and teens grapple with today, but it is also highly treatable. If you are the parent of one of the millions of children/teens who suffer from excessive fears and worries, you are not alone and there are plenty of tools that can help.

Children and teens with social anxiety are not just a little “shy”, they are often extremely self-conscious as they fear being “embarrassed” and “evaluated” by others. They may avoid conversing and withdraw from social situations to “protect” themselves from rejection and to avoid appearing “weird” and “awkward”. For example, they may avoid having lunch in public and eat in the bathroom and/or avoid recess by going to the library. They often wish they had more friends but may lack the social skills or confidence needed to make and maintain friendships.

You can help your child/teen overcome social phobia by seeking science-based treatments, such as Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness. CBT and Mindfulness address the child’s worries and fears and teaches positive coping strategies and calming techniques for managing their inner critic. The scientific literature for psychological treatments shows that kids with anxiety can successfully learn the skills they need to lead a full and happy life and you can help them get there!
